Outside Bukoba

Karagwe
Karagwe district is another district in Kagera region. It was established in 1965, after being separated from the Buhaya Council and forming the Karagwe District Council. This empowered them to formulate their own future of development.

Karagwe district is one of the five rural districts in Kagera Region. The district borders Uganda in the north and Rwanda in the west. The Kagera River runs through the district. Kayanga town (about 107 km from Bukoba) is the main administrative town while Omurushaka (8 km south from Kayanga) is the trading centre. Kayanga town is located on top of a ridge so there are spectacular views from the town. The valley is swampy wet lands.

Karibu MulebaMuleba
Muleba District, a former division of Bukoba District, gained its autonomous status in 1975 and started operations as the fifth District of Kagera Region in 1984. Nowadays the District Council offices are situated at Kibonwangoma Bomani, at Boma Street. You can't miss it: it's the only street with a name, going up, passing the Posta.

Muleba consists of 5 divisions: Muleba, Kimwani, Nshamba, Izigo and Kamachumu. The geographical area covers an area of 3444 km² of land and 7925 km² of water, mostly Lake Victoria and including more than 20 islands in the Lake.

Kamachumu
A historical town with large missions of Catholic Lutheran and Moslem following. It now has lost its major glamour but still shows relics and ruins. It was a major trade centre after Bukoba up to the 1960s when large Indian traders traded in coffee. It had the first magistrate court and first post office. Its King during the German era was made paramount king of all Kingdoms. Kamachumu is home to the renowned first African Cardinal of the Roman Catholic church – Cardinal Laurian Rugambwa. Pastor Mathias of the Lutheran church made a museum of King Rogomora in Ibale village. Remains of the palace of King Kalemera can be seen in Kamachumu.

Ndolage hospitalNdolage
Ndolage is situated on top of an escarpment overlooking Luhanga Village. It is just over one hour's drive south from Bukoba, near the town of Kamachumu. Ndolage itself is based around Ndolage Hospital, a seventy year old Evangelical Church of Tanzania (ELCT) run facility. Ndolage is a small village but home to shops of all the basic necessities of life, plus a small hotel and a couple of bars. Kamachumu is a 15 minutes walk away and home to many more shops and a decent market.

You will not see a better sunrise than when you are sitting on the edge of the rock face of the escarpment with the great orange orb rising like a phoenix from the water. For those of you wishing for an ornithological experience then there is no better place than Ndolage. Kagera Region, but also Ndolage, boasts some of the best examples of African bird life to be found anywhere in Tanzania. There is a variety of habitat allowing for a varied selection of birds, from the tiny but startling fire finch, to the huge and majestic fish eagle.

Rubya
Located on the edge of a beautiful sandstone escarpment, Rubya is 20 Km from Muleba (the district town) and about 80 Km from Bukoba. At an altitude of about 1500 metres above sea level, Rubya has beautiful views of the valley and then Lake Victoria to the east.

Arrival in Rubya is announced by a beautiful tree lined avenue that leads to the heart of the village. The parish church and other parish buildings dominate the centre of Rubya.

Rubya was born as a missionary settlement and the village is based around Rubya Hospital (District Hospital for Muleba District), a Nurse and Midwife training centre and Rubya Seminary. All of which were founded by missionaries. Rubya Seminary celebrated its centenary in 2004. The village also has a Secondary School (Humura), a number of primary schools, a carpentry school, mechanics training centre and a builder's school as well as, a post office, Catholic and Lutheran parish churches, and Mosques in the surrounding villages.
